Next Sketch Outing
Wednesday, Jan. 8: Union Station
Friday night was the 18th annual Winter Waltz @ Benaroya Hall. This is a fundraiser event put on by Friends of Garfield Orchestra and the Garfield High School Orchestra led by Marcus Tsutakawa.
It was a wonderful event open to the community. Students, parents and general supporters of the orchestra attended. An evening of waltzing from 7:00 to 11:00. What was so great about it was seeing everyone enjoy the dance whether or not you really knew how. At some moments there were so many people on the dance floor that it felt like driving in evening traffic! The music was excellent and filled the space. I brought my sketchbook and watercolors here are the sketches I did while there.

Drawn while eating a huge piece of decadent Strawberry Cake and a tall mocha, surrounded by people playing Battleship and Jenga. A homeless guy watched me through the window then came in to fist bump me. They kicked me out at midnight, so it might have to stay a line drawing.
Enjoyed everyone's interior views of the Seattle Public Library. Here’s an exterior view of the iconic building by OMA/Koolaus. Normally, I think irregular forms are easier to draw since it is more difficult to see errors in geometry, scale and proportion. But in this case, proportion does matter. Beneath the gridded facets, you might be able to see my initial attempts in roughing out the forms, which were too narrow given the building’s height. I kept increasing the width as the drawing developed. In looking at the drawing now, it seems that it could be wider still. Nevertheless, an interesting challenge.
I do like this library. Such an amazing space.
We had such an interesting variety of sketches this week. And I learned some interesting pointers.
I'm glad I was able to come after missing last week. Looking forward to February!
I like seeing all the sketches from the music event later in the day. Thanks everybody!
Had to wait until I got to a good scanner for this, my cell phone camera wasn't cutting the mustard to get a clean shot. And yes, I've done work on this since the event, but I would have done the same thing there if I had time...meaning I need to work on my speed! What a great place for sketching, BTW.
On the way to the Geoffrey Castle concert, we stopped to visit Jackie's dad where he was recovering from surgery. After a quick hello, I waited in the car for Jackie and sketched the hospital entrance.
Below is a sketch done by Jackie Helfgott who joined us at the concert. It was her first time sketching with urban sketchers.
As Gail noted, this was a fun opportunity and Celine, the Annual Fund campaign director, really treated us right, providing not only a very interesting tour of the facilities, but also tables!!! to sketch at, which certainly helped with the watercolor set up. Geoffrey Castle moves around quite a bit, so I finally bailed on my 'static' sketch and did some just of him, both in my sketchbook and on his bio sheet that was included in the program.
Sketches from yesterday's Worldwide SketchCrawl at the Seattle Public Library. Enjoyed the gathering as always. What a great warm place to sketch in January.
Some of us had another opportunity to sketch today at a Concert for Musicworks Northwest. This was a fundraising event for this group. Geoffrey Castle, electric violinist gave a wonderful concert. I had heard him before at Sea Tac Airport. He was absolutely amazing. Musicworks Northwest is a nonprofit organization that teaches kids music...makes it available and affordable to any child who wants to learn.
I was astounded by the professional facilities they have for concerts and studios they have for teaching as well as recording music. Thanks to Gabi for setting this up for us.
Fun electric violin concert at Music Works Northwest in Bellevue with four other urban sketchers. Thanks to Gail for letting me tag along.
It was great fun sketching at the library. There are so many spaces and views that you can capture there.
We had some great sketches that came out of this outing.
Here are mine below. I was upstairs doing this ink and watercolor sketch and there weren't any shadows. I started to put all my stuff away and stood up to go and noticed a sudden difference in the view. The sun had come out and there were all these stripes from the shadows being cast by the window frames. Amazing difference in the final composition.
mad sketchers converge on sci-fi building from outer space in Seattle
Join us this Saturday for the 30th WW sketchcrawl at the Seattle Library 10 A.M. Meet at the 4th Ave. entrance. See Map and image below.
Great coffee and company. Here is a view of the tall but intimate space from where I was sitting along a wall of books. It’s always tempting but difficult to capture a holistic, wide-angle view of an interior that mirrors our experience.
We got together Sunday morning at the Bauhaus Coffee Co. (E. Pine). Good coffee can be had at seemingly every corner in the area - and there's an art supply store across the street....Thanks Gail for the organizational efforts.
Great neighborhood to sketch and I plan to go back, maybe when the sun comes out...
Just a heads up! This coming Saturday is the 30th WW sketchcrawl. We are meeting at the Seattle Public Library downtown on 4th Ave. and Madison. We will meet at the 4th Ave. entrance. If it is really cold, windy and rainy look for us just inside the entrance. I will post image and map later this week.
You can also look on the calendar page. Click on the map and a google map will pop up.
Sketching in a warm coffee shop on a wet Seattle day, getting lost in the bricks and books.
Porch boots in the snow. Sometimes snow makes everything look better.
what a treat to get out the fingerpaints after such a dry spell! was great to see you all and share this great spot with its magnificent views of the city, warm and dry in clouds of coffee mist! i managed one sketch each from the windows of Bauhaus and Victrola coffee establishments.
Frank Bettandorf emailed the following sketch of today's event. He was up in the mezzanine with Susan sketching a person down on the main level who was also drawing.
As Gail noted, glad to be sketching instead of watching the Hawks go down. These are both from Bauhaus Coffee (enjoyed from the balcony with the always delightful Frank B).

for the Seattle Times; I sketched this
with the Times. The second is a "modified contour" drawing (thanks for helping me figure out what to call it, Gail!)
Instead of watching the Seahawks play the Bears, we had a pretty good size group of us sketching at coffee houses on the Pike Pine corridor. It was a nice way to spend the morning and from the looks of it was probably the better choice. Here are two sketches I did.

After a long absence, I finally make it out for a sketchcrawl. And realize I got the date wrong! Oh well, here's what the Bauhaus looked like on Saturday... Will
This is just a reminder of this week's Sketchcrawl. Meet outside BauHaus Coffee on Capitol Hill (inside if it is raining) and then you can sketch in comfort from this one or any of the nearby cafe's. Click on the Labels for more information or check our calendar for address of Bauhaus Coffee.

A bumpy ride with my 24 fourth-graders to Garfield High School for their production of The Monkey King. My kids were great, had five awesome parent chaperones, and saw a fun play.
