Jazz Competition

Am so very proud of my daughter (Kiersten) who plays trumpet for the Kentridge High School Jazz Band. They played in a competition at Bellevue College against nationally ranked schools like Seattle's Garfield and Roosevelt. This page was a collection of quick sketches done throughout the day. Pen and ink in the Marty sketchbook.

Sketches from a BC Trip

Here's a few quick sketches from our anniversary trip to British Columbia in October... we took a wonderful boat ride up the Harrison River, great sunny crispy cool weather...

Fishermen were everywhere, on the shore, in the water with hip waders on, standing up in boats...
We had dinner one night in a Chinese restaurant... always fun to save those good fortunes...
People lined up for Tea Time in the hotel after their pool time, dressed in their white robes and bathing suits...
What could be better than a hot cup of tea with cookies on a cool fall day?

Aphrodite's Torso - SAM

After getting wet trying to sketch downtown I bussed over to SAM and did this sketch of Aphrodite's Torso. It was the Urban Sketchers assignment this week - Museums.

Time has been tough on Aphrodite, she's chipped, cracked and missing all limbs but still in better shape than I am and I haven't been around since the 2nd century B.C. (although it feels like it).

Chinese New Year

Some hardy Seattle Urban Sketchers and Seattle Plein Air group braved the weather to get together (briefly) on the 13th to sketch/paint in the International District. We met at covered tables outside Starbucks (just west of Uwajimaya, where this is drawn from).

I got down there early and started a larger sketch (from the children's park) on watercolor paper, but it will take a few more visits to finish.

The weather was wet and sort of cold, not a great day for sketching. We all decided we wouldn't try and get back together in the afternoon but would post what we had done on the sketcher's site.

After giving up on the weather I headed to SAM for some indoor sketching.

October SketchCrawl at the Center

I look forward to our monthly gatherings and the huge learning experience they provide me. Beth, I'm going to try the black paper next time. It was great to meet newcomers Clarence and Ann, hope they plan on being regulars. Gabi, thanks for the effort you put in organizing these events.

Catanzaros Produce

Drawing at Pike Place Market. It was so busy it was tough to find a spot to sketch that wasn't in someone's way.

City Frame

It was a cold grey gloomy Labor day in downtown Kent. The parking spot between me and the buildings I was trying to sketch attracted only the biggest SUVs (Murphy's Law).

Mitchelli's - Pioneer Square

Trattoria Mitchelli's, an Italian restaurant in Pioneer Square that has been there for some 30 years. A good place for a bowl of pasta and strong cup of European coffee. Taught our daughter how to slurp noodles there.....Sketched this just before doing the First Thursday gallery walk.

Sunday Morning Sketching

Looking up at the shelf above the barista's head at Jet City Espresso. A rusty old tuba, odd collection of cups, etch-a-sketch, a Bob Marley & the Wailers album and a base drum, just like home (O.K. maybe not). Sat here on a Sunday morning sketching, drinking coffee and listening to A Prairie Home Companion...

Gas Works Park w/ Seattle Urban Sketchers

Lived in the Seattle area all my life and had never been to Gas Works Park. What a fantastic place to draw! Had a great time joining the group and seeing the work created this morning. A learning experience.

Renton Boeing Plant - Lake Washington

The Renton Boeing Plant sits right on the South end of Lake Washington. There is a fishing and recreation pier on the lake that parallels the aircraft plant. You can draw or fish and listen to Rosie the Riveter build airplanes. The fisherman at the end of the pier didn't move for the longest time, it was a tangled line or a nap...

Here are the lovely urban sketchers! It was wonderful to meet you all and see your astounding work. Hope to see it all up here soon so I can look at it often!
