When I’m driving by, I’m paying attention to the busy traffic at Roosevelt and Ravenna, so I don’t stare at it long enough to watch it turn. So. Many. Interesting. People.🚶♂️➡️<br />🚶🚶♀️➡️🧍♂️🧍👨🦯🏃♀️<p></p><p>And "people" were our focus, as we are kicking off #oneweek100people2024 , brainchild of Liz @lizsteelart and Marc @m.holmes.art . So much to see, so much to sketch, so many people to catch, and so much to talk about! One sketcher was trying to catch all 100 people today. 😲😲😲</p><p>I thought I would paint first and ink later, but I kind of liked the effect of the direct watercolor so much that instead I got my smaller brush out for details. Met so many interesting people today. Although </span>architects had shown ways in which the development could be built while still allowing the tree to live<span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;">, the developer of the property where Astra stood had applied to have the healthy tree cut down.<o:p></o:p></span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: georgia;">A Gratitude Gathering had been scheduled for Feb. 24 to raise awareness of the tree’s imminent danger. That seems like a direct conflict of interest. The result is that laws are in place to protect old trees, but the laws are not always enforced. Even when they are enforced, developers simply pay the penalty and go forward with their plans with no consequences.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: georgia;">I joined the substantial group at the Gratitude Gathering in the Wedgewood neighborhood, where the block in front of the property had been closed so the event could take place. outing. Today we met at Southcenter Mall to sketch their impressive
dragon.<br /><br />Almost everyone did sketch the dragon. Some of us did another scene as well. <br /><br />Since
I'd already done two views of the massive 25 foot tall sculpture a
couple weeks ago, I chose a different view...from above. I also drew it
on a larger sheet of paper.</p><p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53544268451_0a44427400_z.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="486" height="640" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53544268451_0a44427400_z.jpg" width="486" /></a></div><p></p><p>There
was still some time left in our session, so I sat in the hallway to
sketch a view of the lanterns hanging from the ceiling. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53544449373_5aa2bf10ce_z.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="442" height="640" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53544449373_5aa2bf10ce_z.jpg" width="442" /></a></div><br /><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://photos.smugmug.com/SketchOutings/2024-0221-Dragon/i-9jChJ24/0/FB6vK9xNgBQjJM8MS7Wgmh5Pzqx6sRKZRjHL6K5qN/M/12-M.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="411" data-original-width="600" height="411" src="https://photos.smugmug.com/SketchOutings/2024-0221-Dragon/i-9jChJ24/0/FB6vK9xNgBQjJM8MS7Wgmh5Pzqx6sRKZRjHL6K5qN/M/12-M.jpg" width="600" /></a></div><br /><br />MK Buikehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18290622145250386053noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-95539313071875438.post-73853319187333420372024-02-15T06:42:00.000-08:002024-02-15T06:42:00.415-08:00Back to the Burke Museum<p>We met yesterday at the Burke Natural History Museum on the campus of the University of Washington. There are three floors of artifacts and exhibits. <br /><br />I spent some time on the ground floor with Indigenous artifacts. I drew in pencil in the gallery and then went out to a lobby table to ink and watercolor.<br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53531065529_b5b91f2292_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="443" data-original-width="640" height="366" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53531065529_b5b91f2292_z.jpg" width="529" /></a></div><p></p><p>I later found the prep room for mounts interesting. Friends I knew in college were biology grad students who did mounts for our university museum. </div>A small group of sketchers - including someone for the first time - met at the Anderson School in Bothell @mcmenamins this rainy afternoon. The local residents helped as guides for those of us who hadn't been here before. (Thank you!) I even got to meet the chickens, who came running up, clucking away.</div><div><br></div><div>Some got soup, others got coffee, but everyone got some good sketching down. Everyone seemed to enjoy sketching there. Even if one doesn't like sketching aircraft, there are other subjects, including people. <br /><br />Because I'm a volunteer there, I've sketched a lot at the Museum. Today I chose to sketch the oldest aircraft in the collection, the Caproni Ca 20. I learned more about it in a recent <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7Cxfh4wzuo">Curator Q&A</a> with Mathew Burchette. This is the world's first fighter plane, built in early 1914. Unlike all the others in the collection, this aircraft has not been restored. <br /><br />The Caproni family stored the plane in Italy for more than 85 years...most of the time in a monastery. Museum staff dismantled it for shipment. The plush mouse is there because there were so many mice running around in the barn where it was stored! I never knew about the mouse until Mathew's Q&A video. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53400403771_0e73224330_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="449" data-original-width="640" height="449" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53400403771_0e73224330_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://photos.smugmug.com/SketchOutings/2023-1215-Museum-of-Flight/i-xjzdBsr/0/06694bea/M/02-M.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="599" height="450" src="https://photos.smugmug.com/SketchOutings/2023-1215-Museum-of-Flight/i-xjzdBsr/0/06694bea/M/02-M.jpg" width="599" /></a></div><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://photos.smugmug.com/SketchOutings/2023-1215-Museum-of-Flight/i-XnrW6dm/0/9011cebf/M/01-M.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="599" height="450" src="https://photos.smugmug.com/SketchOutings/2023-1215-Museum-of-Flight/i-XnrW6dm/0/9011cebf/M/01-M.jpg" width="599" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>MK Buikehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18290622145250386053noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-95539313071875438.post-39868540246059875962023-12-09T17:48:00.000-08:002023-12-09T17:48:07.622-08:00Warm and Dry at Wallingford Center<p> </p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4nsQZwQ6__pmyDlGlFwSmuZAFvT55kBC5Kr-H2amrpazwnDVEx7uBSOw8LxgZmzwzFfSpdBTwAnbzP1U0O_YlAJoODTbZzhrDcvGhR2CPRvuxWW3a0yA_l4ea0mHnJJ9XvwH9vfgP4rqLoU6BeGW7o3nhtSdR7LqGvo5xnomSow2Rjzlw7w5Gx6j8/s1584/12-9-23%20Museum,%20Inktense,%20Hahnemuhle%20100,%20Wallingford%20Center,%20Seattle.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1071" data-original-width="1584" height="432" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4nsQZwQ6__pmyDlGlFwSmuZAFvT55kBC5Kr-H2amrpazwnDVEx7uBSOw8LxgZmzwzFfSpdBTwAnbzP1U0O_YlAJoODTbZzhrDcvGhR2CPRvuxWW3a0yA_l4ea0mHnJJ9XvwH9vfgP4rqLoU6BeGW7o3nhtSdR7LqGvo5xnomSow2Rjzlw7w5Gx6j8/w640-h432/12-9-23%20Museum,%20Inktense,%20Hahnemuhle%20100,%20Wallingford%20Center,%20Seattle.jpg" style="cursor: move;" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">12/9/23 Wallingford Center</td></tr></tbody></table><p><br /></p><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPg_sybvJ5TA88vnRV9JOcz0L-3skTJBdQwVkZQnNeVW42N6m7qXXYcNDpnexVSgfG2W1OW8X_69EwkFhIr9h6OWORIeWA_dSm2o7O8usVMsnskPOtSGDs_p-fURF3sXqJYk0ZY7rdITwt83GMgsj-bB4LMUr9hiW9Jms8VXsjLhIhU1XNDf-elQbE/s1339/12-9-23%20Museum,%20Inktense%20Blocks,%20Hahnemuhle,%20view%20from%20Chocolati,%20Wallingford%20neighborhood,%20Seattle.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><span style="font-family: georgia;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1339" data-original-width="1000" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPg_sybvJ5TA88vnRV9JOcz0L-3skTJBdQwVkZQnNeVW42N6m7qXXYcNDpnexVSgfG2W1OW8X_69EwkFhIr9h6OWORIeWA_dSm2o7O8usVMsnskPOtSGDs_p-fURF3sXqJYk0ZY7rdITwt83GMgsj-bB4LMUr9hiW9Jms8VXsjLhIhU1XNDf-elQbE/w478-h640/12-9-23%20Museum,%20Inktense%20Blocks,%20Hahnemuhle,%20view%20from%20Chocolati,%20Wallingford%20neighborhood,%20Seattle.jpg" width="478" /></span></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-small;">View of N. 45th Street from Chocolati</span></td></tr></tbody></table><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: georgia;"><br />“All-day rain, 100% precipitation” said my weather app. Ya think? For once, it was accurate. Despite the downpour outside, USk Seattle stayed dry inside Wallingford Center, which has become a winter mainstay for us. art/frame shop nearby on Market St, Annie's Art & Frame, carries some of my

more Ballard spots. So I finally got over to the Farmer's Market and
found a nice area out of the way to capture some of the activity there.
Some friends met up with me to draw too. I exaggerated the orange of the
trees with my tempera paint sticks. <br /></p><p><br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRIKdtoZl91ADozTYr3Aj3lTqOnHa8HDOQGt0SaXhZxGnalRMuKl8nds-gV4SmWw0HBg46rhtLvI9EBZgfCh8iCONTXA8Kw0PhINPkQqvYZx5oeThjX17oPW9HXQkh50ZB41UO9I8kkUndAO0L2XKM3iWCsnNJrOLX7R4ROBOYi33VBBDhW1WXO_5qUXy2/s900/ballard-r.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="791" data-original-width="900" height="562" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRIKdtoZl91ADozTYr3Aj3lTqOnHa8HDOQGt0SaXhZxGnalRMuKl8nds-gV4SmWw0HBg46rhtLvI9EBZgfCh8iCONTXA8Kw0PhINPkQqvYZx5oeThjX17oPW9HXQkh50ZB41UO9I8kkUndAO0L2XKM3iWCsnNJrOLX7R4ROBOYi33VBBDhW1WXO_5qUXy2/w640-h562/ballard-r.jpg" width="640" /> </a></div><p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I

I had planned that we would sketch in the <a href="https://www.pikeplacemarket.org/vendor/secret-garden/">Secret Garden</a>. It's very pleasant oasis of calm in the otherwise still crazy packed Market area! The garden had mostly been put to bed but there were still a couple blooming flowers. I learned that all the food grown there is given to the Market Food Bank. I'd like to return in late spring to see it in bloom.</p>
<p>There are <a href="https://pikeplacemarketfoundation.org/about-us/piggy-banks/">2 other pigs at the Market</a>. The most seen and probably most popular is Rachel, right out in front. Billie sits in the new-ish Market Front Pavilion. But I've never seen this pig and I also couldn't find a name for her. I later learned that she is covered with chalkboard paint and found an image of text written all over her. From bits of flaked off paint, I could tell she was previously painted pink. I referred to her as the planter pig as there was no writing on her today. </p><p>

<p>Once again seeking refuge from the crowds, I found an unoccupied picnic table below the Market Front Pavilion. It gave me a view back up but with a riot of still blooming flowers. The skyscrapers of Seattle rise behind the Market.</p>

<p>We had quite the large group of sketchers…almost 30. Plus one visitor from Urban Sketchers Pune (India). She is <a href="https://www.instagram.com/shruti.utgikar/">Shruti Utgikar</a>, on the right. </p>

The architecture in this area is impressive, but doesn't interest me much for sketching. The trees were looking great though. Recently I've been inspired by artists like <a href="http://instagram.com/ronkiponk">Jenny Adam</a> and<a href="https://twitter.com/GegYjiji"> GEGYjiji</a> to try and capture light in highly sensitive and emotive ways, so this is my attempt. <br /></p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkTfvGYleCXSXF_qPAn5uBa1MUBBEGYUQUnRRqxX6gbMWfZHB3Dum7FQrlBdmGQOr_oQElD7jUBYwMthfycDQYxe-Zle90DVSalmctaVzKJfGD6-nBRljx_xD8OsxF021HjCvfcGD0hyBpSyQQTdS82wjceQp3-KUakwyAunvA9t1DoUeSAx9zYKnDkEMD/s900/seacen-tree-r.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="664" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkTfvGYleCXSXF_qPAn5uBa1MUBBEGYUQUnRRqxX6gbMWfZHB3Dum7FQrlBdmGQOr_oQElD7jUBYwMthfycDQYxe-Zle90DVSalmctaVzKJfGD6-nBRljx_xD8OsxF021HjCvfcGD0hyBpSyQQTdS82wjceQp3-KUakwyAunvA9t1DoUeSAx9zYKnDkEMD/w472-h640/seacen-tree-r.jpg" width="472" /></a></div><br /><p>I liked the swoopy branches on this tree. I only had about 25 minutes before throwdown so I put paint down pretty fast and loose. There was a street performer setting up behind me, and I was kind of excited to be serenaded while drawing. But instead of being a charming musical experience, I was blasted by a wall of sound out of an amp that he played along to. The Harry Potter theme song was so loud I felt like I was in an IMAX theater. People seemed kind of into it, but also kind of annoyed because you couldn't carry a conversation 30 feet away. Maybe that was just me projecting. <br /></p><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigAQWSI3_jjV4nP9Uqyr-C5_G-21mqqYoML7gS7NV2fs7svVMbniyt80zG3iS-97u-bgCa_vHzrvyY3AC9oKpg0E3bviMAz8nUScasY-F8qX7bvxZZ7AEBS6dnUa6FG9OFLP43_UfF2YGtK2NdguJKPsivxcvwAIfuh1V7WjUwK1xAsyTEDDx7CkVFqSx6/s900/fall-seacenter-r.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="565" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigAQWSI3_jjV4nP9Uqyr-C5_G-21mqqYoML7gS7NV2fs7svVMbniyt80zG3iS-97u-bgCa_vHzrvyY3AC9oKpg0E3bviMAz8nUScasY-F8qX7bvxZZ7AEBS6dnUa6FG9OFLP43_UfF2YGtK2NdguJKPsivxcvwAIfuh1V7WjUwK1xAsyTEDDx7CkVFqSx6/w402-h640/fall-seacenter-r.jpg" width="402" /></a></div><p>While I was waiting for the watercolor in the previous one to dry, and for the street performer to be done (luckily he took very long breaks between songs), I started another quick sketch before our throwdown with the WSU students. I'm liking the way the kakimori dip pen is a little bit uncontrollable.</p>Eleanor Doughtyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13441120171780218609noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-95539313071875438.post-2686671407671302672023-10-16T09:39:00.000-07:002023-10-16T09:39:12.386-07:00A Wet Ballard Troll<p> </p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8V4udhL0zOBh5Rg7aI2m6k0ocVfvbFCJbqZqD85FcRX7tzeWesAA9irhb1jakPmHQBPpUp_iFuqSZouQ81zK2pu8XM0kduaw3uOFlJPHjoG69fQg7adGAcUv9g3eyO6R-f1roNzS55QR2BVESdk08io34Eo9H086y76BY2THcBgVY8KYy06wN1wEV/s1337/10-15-23%20Museum,%20Inktense,%20Hahnemuhle,%20secondary%20triad,%20Frankie%20Feetsplinters%20by%20Thomas%20Dambo,%20National%20Nordic%20Museum,%20Seattle.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1337" data-original-width="1000" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8V4udhL0zOBh5Rg7aI2m6k0ocVfvbFCJbqZqD85FcRX7tzeWesAA9irhb1jakPmHQBPpUp_iFuqSZouQ81zK2pu8XM0kduaw3uOFlJPHjoG69fQg7adGAcUv9g3eyO6R-f1roNzS55QR2BVESdk08io34Eo9H086y76BY2THcBgVY8KYy06wN1wEV/w478-h640/10-15-23%20Museum,%20Inktense,%20Hahnemuhle,%20secondary%20triad,%20Frankie%20Feetsplinters%20by%20Thomas%20Dambo,%20National%20Nordic%20Museum,%20Seattle.jpg" style="cursor: move;" width="478" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">10/15/23 Frankie Feetsplinters outside the National Nordic Museum</td></tr></tbody></table><p><br /></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: georgia;">The public and media alike have been falling in love with <a href="https://www.nwtrolls.org/" target="_blank"><b>the giant trolls</b> <b>of Way of the Bird King</b></a>, an art installation by Danish environmental artist Thomas Dambo. Most of us sketched the troll named Frankie Feetsplinter. He was built by Thomas Dambo and volunteers. It started to rain very soon after we began sketching and sketchers chose shelter under umbrellas, moved indoors, or just embraced the rain on their paper. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://photos.smugmug.com/SketchOutings/2023-1015-Ballard-Troll/i-chWtBp8/0/c25e9e94/M/PXL_20231015_215312061-M.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="599" height="450" src="https://photos.smugmug.com/SketchOutings/2023-1015-Ballard-Troll/i-chWtBp8/0/c25e9e94/M/PXL_20231015_215312061-M.jpg" width="599" /></a></div><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://photos.smugmug.com/SketchOutings/2023-1015-Ballard-Troll/i-R6pCx8r/0/ff45fc30/M/PXL_20231015_215358544-M.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="599" height="450" src="https://photos.smugmug.com/SketchOutings/2023-1015-Ballard-Troll/i-R6pCx8r/0/ff45fc30/M/PXL_20231015_215358544-M.jpg" width="599" /></a></div><p></p><p><br /><a href="https://www.nwtrolls.org/">Northwest Trolls</a> - Way of the Bird King</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53261417423_256b18df03_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="491" height="640" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53261417423_256b18df03_z.jpg" width="491" /></a></div><p>That's Alexander and Roy behind the troll. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://photos.smugmug.com/SketchOutings/2023-1015-Ballard-Troll/i-Fs6dkFr/0/51e94e93/M/PXL_20231015_223653400-M.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="599" height="450" src="https://photos.smugmug.com/SketchOutings/2023-1015-Ballard-Troll/i-Fs6dkFr/0/51e94e93/M/PXL_20231015_223653400-M.jpg" width="599" /></a></div><p> </p><p>A few Sketchers had already left by the time we took the group photo<br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>MK Buikehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18290622145250386053noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-95539313071875438.post-79996990014137476582023-10-04T16:57:00.000-07:002023-10-04T16:57:03.775-07:00All hail the King<p>I finally had a good day to see the Vashon troll, Oscar the Bird King. I think he's my favorite so far as I very much like his crown of branches and bird houses. <br /><br />Several small groups trickled in and out as I sketched. I shared what I know of the Pacific NW trolls and Oscar specifically. <br /><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://photos.smugmug.com/MKB/2023-1004-Oscar-the-Bird-King/i-CdQW4C8/0/61d400d6/M/PXL_20231004_175728081-M.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="599" height="450" src="https://photos.smugmug.com/MKB/2023-1004-Oscar-the-Bird-King/i-CdQW4C8/0/61d400d6/M/PXL_20231004_175728081-M.jpg" width="599" /></a></div><br />He is "the last of the 10 characters in Thomas Dambo's story, The Way of The Bird King. Yes, we have the king. And he is magnificent."<br /><br />"The
Bird King, in Dambo’s storytelling, is a character admonishing humans
to be good stewards of their environment...Oscar’s finger
points downward toward the earth and viewers, challenging them to
personally reflect on their role in the environment." <a href="https://www.vashonbeachcomber.com/news/the-bird-king-awakens-at-maurys-point-robinson-park/">Source</a> <br /><p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53235300894_c091ac5e61_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="467" height="640" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53235300894_c091ac5e61_z.jpg" width="467" /></a></div> <p></p><p>A white feather is placed between two long Madrone branches which appear as horns in the crown. <br /></p>MK Buikehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18290622145250386053noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-95539313071875438.post-83647736070160964932023-09-25T17:33:00.003-07:002023-09-25T17:33:52.767-07:00Vietnamese Martyrs Parish<p>I'm fairly certain this was not there last week! While driving another route home yesterday, I noticed the spires above the tree line, which rather startled me. This morning I stopped there on my way back from the post office<strong>.</strong></p>
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img alt="" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53214288754_054e84ba58_z.jpg" /></figure>
<p>This is the <a href="https://vmpwa.org/index.html">Vietnamese Martyrs Parish Seattle</a> part of the<a href="https://archseattle.org/parish-information/vietnamese-martyrs/"> Seattle Archdiocese</a></p>
<p>This is apparently a parish church but it looks like it's going to be the size of a cathedral…spires and dome included! And a neo Gothic one at that. I think this could turn in to a series as I sketch the progress. I pass by this location at least once a week. <br /></p>
<p>I found some history (<a href="https://www.facebook.com/vanishingseattle/posts/the-former-vietnamese-martyrs-parish-on-fir-bw-12th-14th-ave-in-the-central-dist/1905872869491992/">from Vanishing Seattle on FB</a>): In 2018 it was reported the Vietnamese Martyrs Parish in the Central District was to be rezoned & demolished. This particular church community was formed around 1976 with about 50 Vietnamese refugee families and in 2010 officially became Vietnamese Martyrs Parish. It grew to about 1600 families. In 2014, many of the parishioners moved to a temporary location in Tukwila by the Green River, with plans to build a new church & classrooms. I remember watching the new long, narrow, one story building being built about 5 years ago. I never drove in to check but it is that church.</p>

Meandering around the Columbia City neighborhood, I stumbled upon a sculpture I hadn’t noticed before in Columbia Park. Called <a href="https://seattlearts.emuseum.com/objects/1934/spirit-of-washington "><b><i>Spirit of Washington</i></b></a>, the 16-foot sculpture by Quinault and Isleta-Pueblo artist Marvin Oliver “takes the form of a dorsal fin of an orca whale depicting Salish symbols of power and rebirth,” according to the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture. Instead of hitting it face-on, I went around to the side where I could catch the strong shadow it was casting (at left).</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: inherit;">On Rainier Avenue South, Columbia City’s main drag, an old Regency Revival style building with Ionic columns (yes, I had to look it up – I don’t know squat about architectural styles) caught my eye. It turned out to be a 1921 Masonic Lodge that has been operating as the <b><a href="https://cinematreasures.org/theaters/18080" target="_blank">Ark Lodge Cinemas</a></b> since 2012. (One of the films it was showing was <i>Barbie</i> – I couldn’t resist that pink B.) Columbia City has no shortage of historical buildings.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: inherit;">The problem was that the noon sun was nearly directly overhead, so both sides of the building were in the shade. Of course, just as I was finishing the sketch, the sun came around and put some nice bits of light on the building’s front façade. (What happened was a corollary to <a href="https://seattle.urbansketchers.org/2023/09/murphys-laws-of-urban-sketching.html" target="_blank"><b>Murphy’s Laws of Urban Sketching</b> </a>No. 5: The light you were hoping for will appear just as you finish a sketch.)</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: inherit;">On a September day when the weather could go either way, however, I had nothing to complain about!</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVfBKk74_uyFst7fh6HlwwMpVZabHnY1GlAs_lEziVfKeDYWy_8r1O5-Lz-RyNG6kEcfw3JPGwXepDpy1pspKu-6bFiS5JzzhHPLpL1_0OS1wLD-d_Cj8wJAQbbBb_xtIkCWqmLePjpNYL81t6AxHKPOoffVwrMA-GozWqOj_yObjR5jBC9OEHyIvn/s1536/20230922_Columbia%20City%20group%20photo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1536" height="416" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVfBKk74_uyFst7fh6HlwwMpVZabHnY1GlAs_lEziVfKeDYWy_8r1O5-Lz-RyNG6kEcfw3JPGwXepDpy1pspKu-6bFiS5JzzhHPLpL1_0OS1wLD-d_Cj8wJAQbbBb_xtIkCWqmLePjpNYL81t6AxHKPOoffVwrMA-GozWqOj_yObjR5jBC9OEHyIvn/w640-h416/20230922_Columbia%20City%20group%20photo.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: georgia;"><br /></span><p></p><p class="MsoNormal"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjpRpScrB57pAdc5fTBnpQ6b0772ZbQhT-6k_K7WPrWp8pfD0xw9eYMmQ6R7fqfqQMMjgZum79YtHPcDIdKjN_tQZsZyKFbjjWa1YPes95UxxpI4wwaMRrLCQ4YWkZZoh-vEnhlTrdVu2LmaCI_CdmH-5xh58NjR2sbk_VQM4odFFhyGFebzJhf5Qg/s1843/20230922_Columbia%20City%20group%20selfie.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1843" height="348" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjpRpScrB57pAdc5fTBnpQ6b0772ZbQhT-6k_K7WPrWp8pfD0xw9eYMmQ6R7fqfqQMMjgZum79YtHPcDIdKjN_tQZsZyKFbjjWa1YPes95UxxpI4wwaMRrLCQ4YWkZZoh-vEnhlTrdVu2LmaCI_CdmH-5xh58NjR2sbk_VQM4odFFhyGFebzJhf5Qg/w640-h348/20230922_Columbia%20City%20group%20selfie.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p></p>MiataGrrlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00727208043312788510noreply@blogger.com0
