Quick Sketch @ Essential Bakery

I was able to get in a quick sketch this morning @ Essential Bakery....a great place to have a cup of coffee or tea, a pastry and draw a sketch!

Couldn't quite finish this drawing of the First Church of Christ Scientist on Capitol Hill before the raindrops came. What a surprise to see how this Seattle landmark has been converted into twelve condominium apartments. Check out the floor plans at The Sanctuary's website: liveatsanctuary.com.

Hansville WA

"Jane at Hanesville" Ink and Watercolor - Copyright Delorse Lovelady

Here is a quick sketch of a friend on an August outing to Hansville, WA. A lovely day sitting by the water, enjoying the scenery, snapping photos.

Dodging Rain Drops

We were lucky to dodge rain drops at our sketchcrawl this morning.  The sun actually came out for a bit so we were able to see light and shadow.  I waited at my spot long enough to capture the light and shadow on the east side of the building.   We had a few new people show up this morning Sara, Clayton, Robin and Jess.  Contact us if you want to join the google group and blog.  There is a Google group subscribe widget on the side bar of this blog.  The google group will let you know before hand where we are going to be sketching.
This is the sketch of the east entry to the First Church of Christ Scientist.  It would have been wonderful to go in and see the interiors but it has been made into condominiums.

SketchCrawl This Sunday September 25th 10:00 AM

This Sunday we are meeting for a sketch crawl on Capitol Hill by Group Health and First Church of Christ Scientist.  Rain or shine we will meet up at 10 AM on the corner of 15th Ave East and East Denny.  If it is miserable and rainy we will just walk down the street towards the cafes on 15th and sketch under the awnings or in the cafe's.
Hope to see you there.

Sketches from Bellingham and Fairhaven, WA

This Friday and Sunday we drove up to Bellingham to move our son up to Western Washington University in Bellingham. It is such a beautiful location. I didn't have much time to sketch but was able to catch a quick one each about 15 min. sketch. One was at Tony's Coffee in Fairhaven. The other was at Woods Coffee in Bellingham.

DORDRECHT AND HELSINKI

Der Grote Kerk in Dordrecht, Netherlands. This scene showed me something I've never really noticed, shadows and reflections on water. They are tricky and I didn't get it quite right. Anyone know a good trick?

This one is Finlandia Hall in Helsinki, Finland designed by one of my favorite architects Alvar Aalto. It's big for me, a double spread on the 8 1/2 x 11 Moleskin (need a bigger brush).

Netherlands and new techniques

I picked up a 4B pencil and have enjoyed using it to study values. The sun was crisp when I sketched this 1938 house by Baas in Rotterdam across the street from the Netherlands Architecture Institute.
This is a common sketch on our blog. There's no better way to kill a few minutes on the tarmac and 737s are just so "sketch-o-genic".

Seattle-Bremerton Ferry Run

I got a new job a few weeks ago that requires me to drive on the ferry.
I have found a great way to spend the hour by sketching the best views that I can find on my trip.
The first two are ink/WC; the second two are ink/Copic Markers

Halfway down the ramp on the left side of the ferry:

I'm in the very first car on the ramp on the left side:

Waiting for the next ferry (leaving Seattle):

In the center row right behind the motorcycles:

From Seattle to Wrangell, Alaska pop. 2000

(Since June, I've had my pen on a commercial fishing boat in South East Alaska, not so urban, but definitely an extension of what the Northwest is and was)

Tinglit tribal leader, Chief Shakes V, lived just long enough to be relieved from the burden of rule first by the Imperial Russians, secondly the British Empire, and then died only ten years after American incorporation.  He is buried on the slope of a small hill, from which I sat and drew this old boathouse.  Given the latitude, tides are big enough alone to lift large boats up and under these open forms. I think you'd have to be a poet to sit on the boathouse side of the road and think on the grave, rather than the plain frames.  For me, the toil of provincial carpenters trump Chiefs, monuments.
