Bainbridge Island Outing

We had a good group of people who showed up for our excursion to Bainbridge Island on Sunday.  Good sketching, eating, great company of people and a few even got to do a little wine tasting before running to catch the next ferry to Seattle.  Here are my sketches for the day.

Butchart Gardens

Sorry for not making yesterday's gathering, we got back from Victoria after midnight Saturday and I couldn't rally when the alarm went off Sunday (sucks getting old....).
These were a couple of sketches done at Butchart Gardens last week.

Aug. 29 sketchcrawl — Ferry Ride to Bainbridge Island

We plan to take the 10:35 a.m. ferry, so plan to be at the terminal with enough time to buy your ticket. See you there!

stolen moments

Have been working way too much this summer, missed seeing all of you a couple times now. Finally sharing a few sketches from the whole period -- all the way back to our visit to the Center for Wooden Boats.
A little sketch from my favorite haunt, Fishermen's Terminal:
A visit to Steveston, B.C., an historic fishing community:
And finally a reverie along the Snohomish? River in Snohomish, opposite the lumber mill. I forgot to bring a pen so enjoyed trying this with gouache only.
Hope to rejoin you all on the 29th somewhere!

Lakeview Cemetery

It took me a while to get around to scanning these. Lots of statuary, which I love to sketch, and the weather held. Thanks to Mark for setting up the meet while many were out of town. It was a good day to be out drawing, a very interesting setting, and that little cafe you found for us afterwards wasn't too shabby either!

Montlake Bridge

I started this sketch of the Montlake Bridge in April but was stopped due to a sudden rain.  It took until today for me to get back to the Montlake Cut to finish the drawing and add watercolor.  What a great day!Lots of activity on the water and from here there are many more view options.  Great spot for sketching.

Home from Portland

Whew! The Symposium was exciting, intense, tiring and very inspiring. Many talented people who were thrilled to be with so many others who also understand the joy of sketching. When we looked at the work displayed on the last day, there was that delightful recognition that we all had been in similar settings but expressed them in so many different ways.

Many thanks to Gabi for organizing it all and the amazing instructors and correspondents, some of whom came many, many miles to be there.

Here are a few of my sketches.  Portland was a perfect setting with endless possibilities.

Yes, indeed, Susan and I did sneak off for  a visit to the Lu San Chinese Garden and it was exquisite. I settled for trying to capture the mood.

And this from a session on urban line drawing with Lapin in China Town.

Japanese Tea Garden

Thanks to all the local symposium attendees for sharing what was going on. I vicariously got to experience the symposium through you all. It sounded wonderful and I wish I could have attended. I look forward to more posting of your sketches from your time there.

While you were at the symposium on Thursday, I went to the Japanese Tea Garden with some UW students to sketch for the afternoon. It was really a challenge to change from buildings to trees. I had one unsuccessful drawing in the park but was able to get a decent sketch at the entry and a sketch of the waterlilies and carp that I was happy with. So here it is. Look forward to our next meeting.

Peggy at the Lu San TeahouseThe Seattle Urban Sketchers who went to Portland are home, with full Moleskines, great memories and new connections.

Big props to Gabi, who was everywhere and on top of everything. If I were him, I'd be ready for a vacation or a padded room, but at least on the train back to Seattle on Sunday, he seemed to be holding up pretty well and was already talking about Lisbon 2011 with the presenters (including Simonetta, Isabelle, Lapin and our own Frank Ching).

Our days were full with scheduled sketching sessions and presentations. Above is a photo of Peggy, as we played hooky Saturday morning to visit the incredible Lu San Chinese Garden. Below is a sketch from my first session with Lapin on Thursday morning. I took a set of alphabet stamps with me, here dipped in watercolor. Still trying to figure out how to incorporate them...

Looking forward to hooking back up with everyone at our August sketchcrawl!

World Wide SketchCrawl #28 (7/31) - Lake View Cemetery

A cold and grey Saturday in Seattle was the background for our sketchcrawl at Lake View Cemetery (next to Volunteer Park). Met up with Tim Taylor, David Hingtgen, Allison and Sara and we spent just under three hours sketching the monuments and trees of this cemetery founded in 1872.

Yes, I did come across Bruce and Brandon Lee's Memorial site. Lots of flowers with well wishers and curiosity seekers gathered around.
