Substitute Teaching

It's not often I get to sit and sketch when I'm teaching, but occasionally the regular classroom teacher leaves me directions to take the kiddos to the computer lab for math practice. Sometimes they've earned some goof-off time for good behavior. For those cases, I always have my materials on hand to take advantage of the opportunity.

Lincoln Elementary Computer Lab

I subbed for a couple days last week at APP Lincoln, just a few blocks from my house. The kids had earned, according to the lesson plans left by their regular teacher, an hour in the computer lab. When a student asked if she could go back to the room to get her sketchbook, I told her to grab mine as well, and I drew the kids as they played games. I rarely draw people because they move too much, but I was captive with nothing else to do. When I finished, they asked me for a copy so I printed one out for their room.

Elementary School Assembly

The kids noticed I was drawing them, so when we got back to the classroom after the assembly they wanted to see what I'd done. "Don't be upset," I warned them, "You're much cuter than I've drawn you." They enjoyed pointing each other out and recognizing themselves, but Sophie (with the flower in her hair) asked, "Why do we look mad?" I could say it's because they had to sit on cold hard linoleum for an hour, but the truth is, I need to work on the way I see, and hence draw, mouths.

Wallingford Center

I can't help but wonder if the ghostly former art teachers of Interlake Public School were delighted with the Sketchcrawl on Sunday. Such a great variety!
