Richard Serra's Wake
I have found myself thinking about Richard Serra's Wake over the years. Since I first saw it in Seattle's Olympic Sculpture Park, it has left an impression on me. There is something special happening in the negative space of this sculpture. It has a terrific feeling of movement. As I was sketching it, the sun came through the clouds to reveal the genius of the piece which is in the shadows that it casts onto itself. This was the first place that came to mind when I started thinking of a location for my first official urban sketch.
