DORDRECHT AND HELSINKI

Der Grote Kerk in Dordrecht, Netherlands. This scene showed me something I've never really noticed, shadows and reflections on water. They are tricky and I didn't get it quite right. Anyone know a good trick?

This one is Finlandia Hall in Helsinki, Finland designed by one of my favorite architects Alvar Aalto. It's big for me, a double spread on the 8 1/2 x 11 Moleskin (need a bigger brush).

  1. Dan,
    Your shadows look great.
Reflections are usually directly mirrored under your object. You could try wet on wet for a softer watery reflection. Look for high contrast in areas where you see the sky vs the darkness of the object.

  2. Thanks for the idea. I'll try out the wet on wet next time. If I do that first, where the shadows and reflections overlap the shadow can go on when dry.
