Rainy Day at the Ballard Farmers' Market

Wasn't too sure how this day would work out, but we had one of our largest groups.  Probably around 18 people showed up for sketching at the Farmer's Market.  We even had a visitor from Washington D.C.
The weather challenged our ability to sketch.  It was Urban Splashing Northwest style.  You didn't need to pre-splash your water color paper, the rain did it for you!  Despite the challenge it was a great day and the sun finally showed up at the end of our session.

  6. As for me, I love the vitality and ditto on the colors and cohesion.

Gail, can you remind me again of the Velazquez palette? handprint.com lists different ones because I know you included a quinochrodine - was it Quin gold, burnt sienna and ultramarine blue.

On the Bainbridge trip you also mentioned at least 3 additional colors including rose madder red. What were the other two?

I want to try limiting my palette a bit.

  7. My friend uses these as the Velaquez pallette...I think it may be from Jan Hart's version of Velaquez...it is Quin gold, Quin Sienna, and Ultramarine Blue. I bought Jan Hart's watercolor book and the additional colors she seems to use quite frequently is cobalt blue, rose madder genuine$$$, aureolin yellow. The rose madder genuine is really pricey and a subtle reddish color but not real pure red...Daniel Smith has many of these in the stick form. What I was told is that the stick form is the best value. It is equivalent to about 1.5 to 2x as much as a normal Dan Smith tube. So ultimately cheaper. The rose Madder genuine was about 20.00 for the tube. I was surprised at how expensive. If you want to test it out before you buy. Next time I see you I can give you a little dab of each then you can decide if you want to buy them.

  8. Hi Gail,
Wow terrific work! I especially like your point of view with the canopy driving the perspective and your use of white and those clear washes - so fresh! Thanks for your comment on my sketch and I learn much by looking at your work. We did chat a bit before the big downpour lamenting about all the unemployed architects...
