Sketchcrawl Beijing

I really knew I was in the People's Republic of China when I couldn't access any blogs or Facebook. Nonetheless I went sketching. On the day of the Sketchcrawl I was at the Dirt Market (Panjiayuan) in Beijing, so named, I was told, because people used to raid ancient burial sites and bring the goods to market still coated with dirt.
Its a huge antiques (mostly fakes, but good fakes) market in South Beijing that goes on row after row  with everything from snuff bottles, to beads, to jade, to furniture to statuary.

From Wikipedia:
It covers an area of 48,500 square meters, of which 26,000 square meters are for business. There are over 4,000 shops in the market, with nearly 10,000 dealers, 70% of whom come from all parts of China

798 is the Contemporary Arts center in Beijing.
Former Bauhaus-designed factories were discovered after the Cultural Revolution
and made into Galleries and Contemporary Museums.
It's the hub of the very vital contemporary arts scene in China. Very exciting.

Wuzhen
a canal town in mid-south China, just outside Shanghai.Old wooden boats, stone structures. Very relaxing contrast to Beijing.

I just returned and amidst catching up on my sleep, I'm working on organizing sketches and pics.  Will add a link to more later.

Georgetown Sketch Crawl

I had a great time with the Urban Sketchers during the World Wide Sketch Crawl, it was quite a different experience from the nocturnal bars, concert halls and cafes of the Sketch Pistols events, and the weather couldn't have been better for outdoor drawing! I was happy with my truck sketch, but looking at some of the output of the rest of the group makes me think I've got to speed up my technique to get additional drawings (and some color) into my sketchbook. Can't wait for the next one!

Cheers,

To go along with all of the other fine work the USk-Seattle group did this past Saturday, I would like to share three of the sketches I did. As others have already said, it was a beautiful day to draw and share the sights of Georgetown with others.

Worldwide Sketch Crawl

Nice Georgetown sketches, everyone! I unfortunately had to work in the afternoon so I stayed in Everett and participated in the worldwide sketching at Paine Field where they were having a historic flight air show. Here is an aircraft from the Historic Flight Foundation's collection, a Grumman F7F Tigercat.

cold storage on a warm day

Well, thank goodness Tim posted his excellent sketch, as it provides the context for my zoomed in version of the rear of one of the Cold Storage buildings. Ditto to all posted comments: great weather, great location, great group!

Spring Arrives at Georgetown

What a day to be drawing outside! I insist that all of our sketching events be scheduled for days like this from now on.

I just love old, dilapidated, half torn down buildings. It is great fun (for me anyway) to try and visualize what functions were served by all the little doo-dads remaining in the walls. What is all that stuff? The floor locations don't even match as you go around the corners! There are "windows" in walls that were obviously once interior partitions. Building codes? Who needs 'em. And I love all those tough little plants, growing out of the nooks and crannies, with no connection (I checked) to the ground. Since this used to be a brewery, maybe they are hops!

I snuck back out later in the day to draw this train, which had been thoughtfully parked for my sketching enjoyment. I like trains, but drawing them can be frustrating: like animals, they often start moving once they see that you've got the drawing halfway done. BNSF accomodated me this time though.
It was great seeing everyone, and meeting the new folks too. We're getting to be quite a group!

Sketching along Airport Way

Kudos to Mark for suggesting this great location! I had a blast wandering around Airport Way S. and trying to take it all in.

And here is my one effort for the glorious day we spent in the sun.

Georgetown

This was a great venue to sketch! I loved being down in Georgetown. Buildings with a lot of character that connects us to our past. It was wonderful to see an area that hasn't changed too much yet and has kept its historic nature. Nice meeting all the new people and of course the regulars that showed up for this sketchcrawl too.

Second monthly Olympia Sketchcrawl

Meet USK Olympia!
We met at the Farmer's Market. A bit warmer this time than for our first sketchcrawl. Great to see the enthusiasm.

2010 Three by the Sea

Buon giorno!  My husband and I have finished traveling three weeks in Sicily. I heartily recommend it for its beauty, friendly people, fabulous food. Whenever we travel, I am excited to see a new body of water and I love how the names roll off the tongue. Here are three sea sketches. I can't capture the wonderful blues - maybe my dry paints aren't rich enough - I hope I captured the peace. The first is a surprising Mediterranean view from an inexpensive hotel, the second, a view of E'rice, an ancient fortress hill town on the  Tyrranean Sea, the third, just a random beach on the Gulf of Palermo. All viewed from Sicily.

Next stop, Greece. Hope you are all enjoying good sketching in the northwest! Peggy
