Whidbey Island

We spent the weekend on Whidbey Island. Great weather. I highly recommend the place.

Speaking of highly recommended, if you are on the island you simply must go to Ft Casey State Park. See the sorts of picturesque places that the military used to force our servicemen to endure. I don't think I would have minded being drafted, had I ended up here:

Coastal fortifications became obsolete about a hundred years ago, and these guns were never fired in anger. They have left a cannon in one of the batteries to remind everyone just how nasty people can be sometimes, but the site is now put to much more productive and less dangerous use as a superb picnicing, clambering-around, and kite-flying site: (click to see full view)
Mt Baker in the distance at sunset. My little travel w/c set and my limited mixing skills were completely outmatched by the pink alpenglow on the snowfields. That's Camano Island just across the water. The mountain is actually on the mainland, across another body of water. Puget Sound is complicated!
