December sketchcrawl

Just opening the discussion about this month's sketchcrawl. I'm up for one either next Sunday Dec. 13 or Sunday Dec. 20.

  1. Let's choose an indoors, warm place don't you think? we could even just meet for brunch and sketch our food, each other and the view through the windows!

  2. The Commons at Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park is a large area surrounded by restaurant counters, with big tables, and welcomes artist activities, as does the Seattle Convention Center. Both also have easy access to parks outdoors. University of Washington Hub also has food available and big lobby areas suitable for group meets.

  3. Here is another place to consider. Wallingford Center is an old school that was turned into shopping area but still has the quaint feeling of the turn of the century school. Or have you gone to any of the Seattle Libraries yet?

  4. Gingerbread Village at the downtown Sheraton! =D

  5. I have a conflict on the 13th, but am (so far) open on the 20th. Would be pleased to go where ever the crowd decides. One consideration would be if there are enough sitting options here and there. Warmth is definitely desirable!

  6. Country Village in Bothell has interesting outdoor scenery, plus plenty of quaint shops, indoor opportunities, and a couple of restaurants.
On Dec 13 Third Place in Lake Forest Park will have a mini indoor farmers market and still plenty of tables in the Commons area to sit. Also a small craft fair downstairs... could be interesting opportunities. Lots of food choices.

  7. I'm available either day right now although the 13th sounds like a safer choice. Three pretty libraries I checked either are closed on Sunday or don't open until noon. I think 3rd Place Books and vicinity would be roomy and not too crowded by shoppers.

  8. Phoenix would be my first choice, but if pressed, I think Third Place Books or Wallingford Center on the 13th works.

  9. I like the idea of Third Place Books on the 13th, especially if they have the mini indoor farmers market. And I've always wanted to sketch the giant chess board game but never get around to it because i have to chase my kids running around all over the bookstore.

I don't know what 'Phoenix' is Mark, is that another bookstore? sorry, i'm such a newbie in this town!

Wallinford may be too crowded with shoppers this time of the year? Perhaps we could do that one in January, I'm sure it'll still be cold then!

  10. You know, Phoenix. As in warm place where snowbirds go.

  11. I can do either date. Since I'll be driving south from Mt. Vernon I'll need help finding the location you select. Thanks.

  13. Tim is having a blog glitch of sorts when trying to comment here so he sent this suggestion via email:

Either Sunday works for me. Personally I like the idea of going to the UW campus- Lots of potential subjects. I've always been intrigued by that big Gothic library bldg on Red Square. I assume we would be able to go inside if it's cold/raining/snowing(!)... Parking's not too usually too bad on Sundays either.

  14. Another idea... the International District. Uwajimaya has a food court kind of thing that's indoors. Lots of color and decor.

  15. just read that Elliott Bay Bookstore is officially moving to Capitol Hill... it would be a nice tribute to the Pioneer Square location to sketch there before they move... but let me check with them first... Being a private business, it would be better to ask for permission first

  16. I think the Lake Forest Park idea sounds fun, but I also like Gabi's idea of the Elliott Bay Book Co. It would be cool to capture their original location before they move to Capitol Hill.

  17. I'd prefer 3rd Place, but the other sounds interesting too...

  18. Here's a comment for Tim that's having the posting problem. Don't know if it's the same, but I was too & spent time in my firewall & tools to no avail. BUT, here's what does work: I opened up the Seattle Sketcher blog in my Internet Explorer browser instead of my usual Mozilla browser. Solved the problem for me on all blogs that do the comments on the same page like this one, rather blogs that use a separate window, which will accept comments with Mozilla... go figure... hope this helps.

  19. I like the idea of Elliot Bay book store. Especially since they are moving. They have a coffee shop downstairs.

Suzzalo Library is wonderful to draw. The entry lobby, stair and the graduate reading room. It is all quite challenging. We have taken students there to draw in the past years.

  20. Lots of good choices. UW might be more exciting in the spring though.

  21. I agree about waiting for the Spring at UW. We might be able to make it in time to catch the Cherry Trees in Bloom.

  22. Karen Maeda from Elliot Books replied and said we are OK to go sketch at the bookstore as long as we don't interfere with people browsing or buying.

I love the coffee shop downstairs. How about meeting there at 11 a.m. That's when they open on Sunday's according to the website.

re: error with commenting... i get a message error first too, but then i hit 'post comment' a second time and it works. so hit that sucker twice just in case

  23. wait, let's meet at Elliot Bay Café at 10:30 a.m. (this sunday dec. 13) The bookstore opens at 11 a.m. but I just read the café opens at 10 a.m.

This should do it as far as setting up our December sketchcrawl!!!

see you then! stay warm out there!

  24. Sorry, I'll have to miss this one. I develop rather a conflict of interest when ski season rolls around. Have fun and I'll catch up next time! -Will
